Plan D – Medicare Insurance – Turning 65

What is Part or Plan “D” of Medicare?

Occasionally you will hear someone mention “Plan D” in regard to Medicare insurance. Medicare has a few different parts which are designated with the letters A, B, C and D. There are also Medicare Supplement plans offered which are designated with letters as well. This creates a common confusion among those newly turning 65 (and some who have had Medicare insurance for years). With parts and plans using the same letters it is quite easy to become mixed-up. Part D and Plan D are not the same thing in this case.

Let’s clear up the confusion:

Part D

Medicare Part D is the prescription drug portion of Medicare.  Part D can be obtained through a stand-alone prescription drug plan, or through a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C). If you have a Medicare Supplemental plan, such as plan F, a Part D plan would provide the prescription drug coverage. Medicare Supplement plans do not currently include prescription drug benefits. Part D of Medicare will include prescription benefits, and these plans are offered through carriers such as Blue Cross Blue Shield.

Plan D

You will likely not find a Plan D offered. Plan D was a Medicare Supplement plan that is no longer offered. It is possible that you spoke with someone who was grandfathered into the plan. If you are turning 65 currently, you won’t find the plan available.
