Understanding Medicare in Texas

We’d like to help you understand your options by providing a general overview of the four major Medicare Parts.

Part A is also referred to as hospital insurance. This part helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, or a Religious Nonmedical Health Care Institution. Part A also aids in the payment for hospice services and home health care services.

Part B, or medical insurance, covers medical necessities such as doctor visits, outpatient care, and durable medical equipment. Preventive services are also covered through this plan. Beneficiaries are responsible for all payments until the deductible is met. At that time, Medicare will start paying its portion.

Part C is better known as a Medicare Advantage Plan. Since Medicare Advantage Plans combine elements of Plan A and B, supplemental Medigap policies are not allowed in combination with a Medicare Advantage Plan. Part C options may provide extra coverage including Medicare (Part D) prescription drug coverage but may have other downfalls such as smaller doctor networks.

Part D, or prescription drug coverage, is available through an approved insurance company. Your costs include the monthly premiums, annual deductible, copayments, and costs during the coverage gaps. Your plan choice and prescriptions can also affect your cost.

Medicare Supplement Plans or “Medigap Plans” are considered supplemental to parts A and B of Medicare. These plans are able to cover the gaps of Part A and Part B coverage.
